These bags are made in the UK from film that has been accredited to ‘OK biobased’ and DIN EN 13432. They are made from annually renewable PLA derived from vegetable starches (potato, sugar beet etc.) and are fully biodegradable and compostable, breaking down to CO2 and H2O and biomass (compost).
Bio-bags are barely distinguishable from their polypropylene equivalents, offering similar clarity, rigidity and protection. However they are slightly less robust - if used for bulky items they will show white marks if you crumple them up. So they are not strong enough for very heavy items.
If you need to use clear packaging for your cards etc. these bags are as green as you can get and offer a viable environmentally friendly alternative to polypropylene.
In normal conditions bio-film bags are quite stable - with ideal conditions (at room temperature, kept away from humidity and direct sunlight) shelf life should be up to 12 months but may well run a good bit longer (Some of our original corn starch bags lasted a good bit longer but the new vegetable starch bags were only launched last year so until they start to degrade we don't have a definitive time scale). The main thing to avoid is prolonged exposure to humidity - avoiding excessive heat, moisture and light will maximise shelf life. (If a bag is splashed with water they don't start to degrade immediately. If wiped off straight away they should come to no harm.)
All our biofilm (and cellophane) bags are fully biodegradable and compostable which means that they break down to CO2 and water which can then be reused in the eco system to make new plants. This will happen in either in home or commercial composting or landfill. They will still break down to CO2 and water but in commercial composting the temperature will be higher and the process is much quicker. In a colder home composter it will just take longer.
These bags are primarily intended for greetings card and prints but we do not guarantee the suitability of these products for any specific purpose. You must conduct your own tests on products before placing orders, to ensure that they are suitable for your requirements. We are happy to supply sample products for you to run your own tests on, before ordering or you can also use our sample service before you place a large order. (Recycled, renewable and compostable materials are natural products which liable to variation so we advise that all orders should be checked for any variation before using them.)
COMPOSTABLE FILM - CARE & HANDLING:
Biofilm is a natural product designed to compost at end of use. However it is not an exact like for like replacement for Polyprop or PVC. It has different properties in use, and although it has a similar appearance, it is not as forgiving of rough treatment as the petro-chemical bags it replaces. Therefore, to get the best from compostable bags we recommend that they should be kept away from high temperatures and humidity, which along with careful handling and the correct storage will avoid damage to its appearance and maximise shelf life.

They are designed for use with greetings cards and many of our customers use them for putting artwork in.
However we would not recommend them for archival use or with valuable paintings as we cannot guarantee them to be 'acid free'. So for such applications our bag manufacturers would recommend the use of polyprop bags instead.
