These bags are made in the UK from NATIVIA® film that has been accredited to EN 13432 and ‘OK biobased’. They are made from Plant Based (annually renewable) PLA derived from vegetable starches (cornstarch) and are compostable and biodegradable. Biodegradation occurs at end of life once exposed to moisture, heat and naturally occurring bacteria / fungi when it will break down into compost (not micro plastics). To maximise shelf life – simply avoid excessive heat, moisture and light (If a bag is splashed with water they don't start to degrade immediately. If wiped off straight away they should come to no harm.)

BIODEGRADATION INFO:
All our biofilm (PLA and cellophane) bags are compostable which means that they break down to CO2, H20 and biomass which can then be reused in the eco system to make new plants. This can happen in either in home or commercial composting but in commercial composting the temperature will be higher and the process is much quicker. In a colder home composter it will just take longer. (To be most effective home composting requires the presence of micro-organisms, moisture and a supply of oxygen, so for happy home composting you will need to turn the heap from time to time to aerate it.)

PRODUCT SUITABILITY:
These bags are primarily intended for greetings card and prints but we do not guarantee the suitability of these products for any specific purpose. You must conduct your own tests on products before placing orders, to ensure that they are suitable for your requirements. Before you place an order, we are happy to supply sample products for you to run tests on. You can obtain samples for most products by simply clicking on the ‘add sample’ button on each product page. (All our recycled, renewable and compostable materials are natural products which liable to variation so we advise that all orders should be checked for any variation before using them.)

COMPOSTABLE FILM - CARE & HANDLING:
PLA Compostable film is a natural product designed to compost at end of use. However, it is not an exact like for like replacement for Polyprop or PVC. It has different properties in use, and although it has a similar appearance, it is not as forgiving of rough treatment as the petro-chemical bags it replaces. Therefore, to get the best from compostable bags we recommend that they should be kept away from high temperatures and humidity, which along with careful handling and the correct storage will avoid damage to its appearance and maximise shelf life.

PLA COMPOSTABLE FILM – END OF LIFE:
The Compostable PLA film bags we supply are designed to allow end users to compost them at the end of life, as an alternative to sending them straight to landfill. The following is a rough guide to their disposal at end of life:

NATIVIA® PLA film is suitable for:

Industrial Composting
Incineration (thermal recovery)

NATIVIA® PLA film is NOT suitable for:

Home recycling (it should not go in with plastic bottle recycling collections)
Paper recycling (it should not be put in with paper recycling collections)

NATIVIA® PLA film can also be:

Disposed through Landfill (Although there are no adverse effects – it will remain inert and not biodegrade due to low moisture content)
Recycled Mechanically or Chemically: But as both of these are specialist industrial processes they cannot be regarded as suitable at end of life for most purposes.
Home Composting: Although accredited for Industrial composting NATIVIA® PLA film is not accredited up to the level of OK Compost Home. This is because in many parts of the UK / EU local temperature and humidity will not be high enough to guarantee that it will break down by biological action to at least 90% within 6 months - as required to meet the accreditation criteria. However, that doesn’t mean to say that they will not break down at all. With the presence of suitable bacteria / fungi to start the process, the film will break down into compost, but it will take much longer. So, just to check (mainly because Industrial composting is not available everywhere in the UK), we recently conducted a trial in our own home compost bins to gauge how much longer it will take in Lancashire - after about a year we couldn’t find any bags remaining.

LITTERING:
PLA film is designed for composting but that does not negate any responsibility for inappropriate disposal at the end of life. Compostabilty is not an excuse for littering the environment!

Customer Questions
Are your bags suitable for original artworks, prints, lino-cuts?

They are designed for use with greetings cards and many of our customers use them for putting artwork in.
However we would not recommend them for archival use or with valuable paintings as we cannot guarantee them to be 'acid free'.

Samples products are free but there is a small charge for delivery unless included with an order.

This is £2+VAT for UK customers.

You can have a maximum of 5 Samples per order.

Unfortunately we are currently unable to provide samples outside the UK.

Recycled paper will vary between batches, we can't guarantee samples will match the next batch. Batches normally last 1 to 2 weeks.
