Clear, food-grade compostable cellulose bags. Made in the UK from biodegradable cellulose (derived from renewable wood pulp) Suitable for heat sealing and food use. Please see FAQ's below, or for more detail, please see full Material Specification.
Although many of our customers have been using our Bio-based film bags since 2007, for those new to the material, these bags are a renewable, plant-based alternative to conventional petro-chemical plastics. They are made from wood pulp and are biodegradable, supporting a sustainable packaging cycle.
Yes - they’re coated with a thin PVdC layer that makes them food safe and suitable for heat sealing. Perfect for items like snacks, wax melts, seeds, soaps, or cards with food contact.
You can use a heat sealer, or simply close them with tape or a label (our recycled self-adhesive labels work perfectly).
Cellulose requires a much lower temperature than traditional plastic so we recommend going for a sealer that has an adjustable temperature setting. Starting at the lowest temp and working up to achieve the best results.
For food use, the film manufacturer recommends a shelf life of about 6 months at room temperature (17–23°C), away from humidity and direct sunlight. Stored properly, samples have lasted much longer. Bags are quite stable under normal retail conditions - avoid heat, moisture, or bright direct sunlight to maximise lifespan.

They are also not suitable for freezing/cold storage; the manufacturer does not guarantee performance below 0°C.

Yes! For home composting, the film can start to break down within a few weeks, depending on ambient temperature. Industrial composting can achieve 90% biodegradation in less than 45 days, though the standard allows up to six months. To compost effectively at home, make sure micro-organisms, moisture, and oxygen are present, and turn the heap occasionally.
